DRAWING A CARTOON CAR
In this tutorial I will guide you through the drawing and coloring technique
that I developed myself for creating cartoon cars using the
COREL DRAW and  the PHOTOSHOP.

Try COREL DRAW X3 to draw outlines of the cartoon car!

Corel Draw X3

CS3-PSD-468x60

Without the Photoshop you just can't make a cartoon car. Try it !

Versions of programs that I use are the COREL DRAW X3 and  the
PHOTOSHOP CS 2, but all older versions will suffice.
I work with the WACOM Intuos3 graphic tablet in A4 size,
the best and only graphic tablet that satisfied me.

We can begin with a  good photo. According to choosen car photography
you have to draw all main lines of the cartoon car in COREL DRAW
using a Polyline tool mixed with Shape tool and elastic mode of curves.
It will alow you to draw a precise car drawing with all details with 0,3 milimeter lines.
After finishing the first step which is BTW very boring and longlasting,
you have to export it as a TIFF bitmap or  high quality JPEG
in 300 d.p.i. resolution that alows you very precise coloring and high level of details.
Now We can start working in the Photoshop. Open a exported TIFF or JPEG
image and turn a background into a normal layer by double clicking it.
That will alow you to colour image without losing the main lines of the drawing.
After making a new layer, we can start a coloring process.
For the beginning we can colour all black  and gray surfaces using a
Paint bucket tool. After that step we are going to put some colours
on the tyres using the Gradient tool. Now you can select  body areas that have
to be colored, using the Magic wand tool, and colour them with a Paint bucket tool.
I have always use a red colour. Red colour alows me the best possibility in colour
changing with the HUE / SATURATION option, and shows the best contrast
between higlights and shadows.
After that step we can start to work on the reflections.
Select the areas you want to highlight and use the Dodge tool to brighten them.
If you have to make a more shine on the surface,
use the Eraser tool with wanted brush size and opacity value.
The same method you can apply for the shadows using the
Burn tool with similar settings as the Dodge tool.
Now we can start working on details like headlights, rims, windshield or chrome parts.
Basically we have to use the same method like previously but with more small parts
and details added with Brush tool in different sizes.
Every step you have to make in another layer because of
possibility to delete it without any danger to ruin the previous steps.
After it is done, we just have to make a shine on the highlight areas and the edges,
adding a white colour in wanted brush size and opacity or using the Eraser tool
on the flattened image.

To make a colour change we have to select wanted red areas
and change colours by using the HUE / SATURATION function. Easy, isnt it ?

If you want to draw a cartoon car in motion, just select areas that has to be
motioned with Polygonal lasso tool and apply the radial and the motion blur filters.

You just have to play with this. It is not easy at all and it takes a time,
but you will succeed. I'm shure.
